We have a large inventory of live edge wood slabs available.
The cracks and voids are filled with crushed stone or epoxy.
Please note that each sign is unique, and due to the natural variations in wood grain and color, no two pieces will ever be exactly the same.
We can provide example designs, these can be modified to try and fit what is desired on the sign.
Not all requests can be granted, but the WSBD graphic artists, and 30+ years of sign design, requests can usually be filled.

Up to three mock designs/changes are included with purchase.

The WSBD Materials & Process
Our unique signs are meticulously crafted from sustainably sourced wood, ensuring that every creation is not only stunning but also eco-friendly.
Premium Wood Selection is a must, and we use only the finest quality woods, ensuring durability and a timeless appearance that will last for years to come.
We only use environmentally sustainable sources of salvaged wood from trees that have been felled in a storm or removed by landscape companies and then saved from ending up in the landfill.
Once the tree logs have been rescued by us, they are brought to our Urban Sawmill, Soul of the Wood Sawmill, to be milled and slabbed into usable lumber by our Woodland Mills HM130Max Sawmill.
Slabs are then processed through our Oliver Helix Planer to smooth them down.
The tricky part comes here where the edges are de-barked, and then the live edge goes through a process that cleans it, while keeping its natural texture.
These are freshly sawmilled logs, so they have cracks, checks and voids in them and those defects need to
be properly filled with either epoxy, crushed stone, wood splines, screws, corrugated staples or a combination of these.
This is essential so the wood halts any further cracking.
Once this process is finished, we finally have a blank canvas to work with.
The chosen design for the sign is then hand sketched onto the wood surface and then the actual carving can take place.
Once the sign is carved, every piece boasts intricate patterns and crisp lettering, and the carved away sections painted, allowed to dry, then sanded smooth.
To preserve the quality of our wood signs, each piece is treated with a protective finish, ensuring that it remains a cherished keepsake for generations to come.
Coats of tung oil are applied, allowed to cure into the wood for a day and then the process of final poly coats is performed rendering the finished product.
Polyacrylic and polyurethanes procured from a local government recycling program are used that are environmentally friendly, sustainable and to help keep cost better contained.
Outdoor signs we also offer as an upgrade and upcharge Helmsman UV Spar Urethane - it’s pricy but the best.
We can’t cheat this process and still maintain our standard of quality, so our Wood Signs have this progression they must go through before we can send out our signs to our customers.
