It’s possible! Onsite from the Fontana, CA Research & Development Facility The Senior Research Engineer role will work on technology development projects focused around developing solutions through high-volume machining and system design.
This work will be in collaboration with various functions within the Global R&D community as well as some interactions outside of R&D.
This role will also be responsible for executing R&D technology strategies set by the R&D Leadership Team.
The right candidate will be capable of taking complex problem statements from early-stage concepts through manufacturing implementation, provide technical input on machining design, processes, and practices.
Typical travel can range up to 25%, depending on project phase.
What You’ll Do: Spearhead the development of innovative systems, features, and accessories, prioritizing the enhancement of installation efficiency and effectiveness.
Transform conceptual ideas into tangible prototypes by leveraging rapid prototyping techniques, mock-ups, and other suitable methods.
Establish expertise as the go-to Subject Matter Expert (SME) for machined products, including comprehensive oversight of product and process design.
Manage the seamless execution of technical solutions, guiding them from conceptualization to successful integration within James Hardie's manufacturing processes.
Conceptualize and engineer products that prioritize manufacturability and seamless installation, without compromising on aesthetic appeal.
Explore, recommend, and implement cutting-edge techniques, processes, and tool designs, fostering the development of novel products.
Offer technical support and expertise throughout the design, installation, start-up, and initial production phases of new processes.
Foster collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality documentation, and relevant specifications for new technologies and equipment required for project advancement.
Collaborate closely with the Intellectual Property (IP) team to analyse the intellectual property landscape and drive the development of patent-worthy solutions.
Work in conjunction with other key technical personnel and manufacturing plants to gain an in-depth understanding of feasibility and ensure the viability of proposed solutions.
Actively participate in innovation sessions and workshops aimed at honing innovation skills and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Foster and maintain a culture of Innovation: Actively participate in innovation sessions and workshops focused around fine tuning your innovation skills Foster and maintain a culture of ZeroHarm: Ensure that James Hardie’s operations are in line with Work Health and Safety Requirements at all times.

What You’ll Bring: Essential Criteria: •Experience and understanding of machining products in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
•Proficiency in utilizing 2D & 3D drafting/sketching tools for effective communication, including: Creating and managing product assemblies, Concept sketching, Implementing stack-up tolerances, Applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles •Comprehensive knowledge of technical risk assessment, problem-solving methodologies, and decision-making tools, such as: Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), KT-Analysis, KJ Analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), etc.
•Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate seamlessly across all organizational levels, from manufacturing operators to upper management.
•Proven ability to mentor and coach team members in machining processes and best practices.
•Strong problem-solving skills with an analytical mindset for effective troubleshooting and process optimization.
•Self-motivated with a demonstrated sense of urgency, resourcefulness, and adaptability in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
•Proficiency in AutoCAD and Inventor software for accurate and efficient design and modeling.
\ Master’s degree in Engineering, with preference for Civil/Structural or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
Bachelors degree required (degree must be from an accredited institution) •A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
•Proven experience in the areas of Research and Development (R&D), innovation, product development, manufacturing, or equipment design.
Desirable: •Background in high-volume manufacturing and an in-depth knowledge of building products is highly advantageous.
•Prior experience in machining fiber cement products is highly advantageous.
•Prior experience in equipment and process specification is advantageous and contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the production process.
•Preference for candidates with at least 4 years of practical experience in precision machining, moulding, or forming within an industrial setting.
•Ideally familiar with construction practices, building science, and a solid understanding of building codes.
