Based in Southern California’s rapidly growing Inland Empire, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit affordable housing developer originally founded in 1991.
Today, the nonprofit owns - either directly or through partnerships - nearly five hundred units of income-qualified rental housing, and manages a total portfolio of roughly 1400 units stretching from western Riverside County to Blythe.
It has an experienced and motivated staff of approximately 35 people, and an annual operating budget of more than $5 million.
*The Position* The Controller provides leadership for the corporation’s financial systems and team members, and ensures that the administration of the organization's accounting functions is of the highest accuracy, quality, and security.
The Controller provides timely and thoughtful analysis of the corporation's financial health and performance, and makes recommendations to improve and optimize it.
The Controller works as a member of a senior management team that includes a Chief Executive Officer and a Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, and will also have significant engagement with the Vice President of Construction.
The Controller will be responsive to a Finance Committee composed of board members and, from time-to-time, will be expected to make insightful presentations to the corporation’s Finance and Executive Committees.
Specifically, the Controller is responsible for the development and analysis of corporate budgets, project cost accounting, preparation of general ledgers and financial statements, and coordination of annual audits (conducted by an outside public accounting firm).
The Controller supervises a staff of accountants, bookkeepers, and payable/receivable clerks to manage the payroll function, and the completion and production of all periodic (monthly, quarterly, annual) financial records, statements, and accounts.
The Controller also oversees the preparation and timely submission of tax returns.

Must be acquainted and comfortable with modern, computer-based property management systems, and be capable of integrating them with the accounting and financial management of the corporation.
Analyzes and forecasts financial trends, and operating issues in advance to maximize upside opportunities and limit downside disadvantages.
Familiar with commercial and residential financing practices.
Comfortable negotiating with vendors of financial services such as insurance.
Analyze, review, and restructure existing finance and accounting functions and procedures utilizing new technologies and other lean and agile methods.
Ability to standardize financial reporting formats, complete timely reviews of financial statements, and provide insight, feedback, and corporate financial guidance.
Ability to envision best practices, procedures, and courses of action for the corporation.
*Duties & Functions* Duties include, but are not limited to: · Manage and oversee all accounting processes for Yardi Voyager.
· Create and maintain an effective system of accounting controls, policies, and procedures, including a written bookkeeping manual.
· Refine and improve the corporation’s chart of accounts.
· Monitor, review, and approve all financial entries and journal entries (accrual basis accounting).
· Monitor and review all subsidiary accounts to ensure they are balanced.
· Supervise and assign accounting staff and AP/AR staff to various tasks and duties.
· Review and develop corporate budgets and project budgets.
· Present monthly updates that track budget performance.
· Maintain accurate balance sheets and financial statements.
· Identify and analyze business, financial, audit, and tax related issues within the organization Oversee preparation of monthly/quarterly reports for governmental agencies and creditors.
· Submission of online payroll to outside vendor.
· Attend meetings and report to Financial, Executive, and Audit committees.
· Maintain an understanding of governmental funding agreements to integrate their requirements into organization's financial statements.
· Maintain organization's fixed asset management/depreciation schedules.
· Coordinate and oversee engagement and completion of independent outside Auditor reports Review Tax Returns and ensure their timely filing.
· Review Cash Flow (Residual Receipts) reports for governmental agencies and project partners.
*Qualifications* Broad knowledge of finance, accounting, and budgeting disciplines required.
Degree in business, finance, or accounting is preferred.
CPA license desired.
Minimum seven years senior experience in finance, accounting, and financial analysis required.
Proficiency in general accounting software, Excel, Word, and Outlook is required.
Ability to express financial concepts in effective reports that combine words, numbers and pictures is a plus.
Knowledge of Yardi Voyager or other real estate property management system desirable.
Experience and knowledge of nonprofit organization operations and accounting methods is desirable.
Past experience with investment tax credits (state and/or federal) is a plus.
Knowledge of real estate development, construction, and property management accounting is a plus.
*Compensation & Benefits* This is a full time, in-office permanent position requiring 40 hours per week - Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Limited remote work may be possible for special circumstances with prior notice.
Salary range $100,000 to $115,000.
Offer made commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Includes medical benefits, 401K retirement plan, and two weeks paid vacation.
