JOB SUMMARY The Department of Child Development at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for an Assistant Professor, tenure track position in Early Childhood Development to be located primarily at the University's satellite campus in Palm Desert.
The position may also involve teaching at the CSU, San Bernardino campus.
The position begins August 2024.
The Department is seeking applicants who have expertise in early childhood (birth to age 8) to teach courses centered on early childhood, early childhood education, parenting, and families.
Area of concentration within early childhood is open, although at least some training in early childhood special education is preferred.
Qualified candidates are those that: Possess the necessary content expertise, Specialize in studying development within home and school contexts Have practical experience working with young children (minimum of two years) Engage in scholarship and teaching supporting historically underrepresented groups, diversity, equity, and/or social justice.
The Department of Child Development offers both theoretical and practical application courses, designed to help prepare graduates for direct service careers working with children of diverse backgrounds.
The Department strongly emphasizes the merging of developmental knowledge with practical experience and understanding the complexity of the intersectionality present in early educational and developmental contexts.
TYPICAL ACTIVITIES The successful candidate will be able to teach undergraduate courses (ranging in size from 30 to 200 students) in infant, toddler, and early childhood development; programs and curriculum for young children; developmental domains such as social/emotional and cognitive development; parenting and family relations; observational methodology; and an advanced seminar in development.
Emerging evidence of excellence in university teaching is essential, as is practical experience in an early education setting and university experience with curriculum development and program supervision.
Additionally, the successful candidate must have an active and viable research program in which they can supervise, mentor, and involve undergraduate and graduate students.
Potential for securing external funding is also desirable.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.
Willingness to build partnerships within the Palm Desert Campus community and surrounding Coachella Valley area as part of teaching, mentoring, and research responsibilities is also desirable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A Ph.
D.
in early childhood studies, child development, human development, developmental psychology, education, or a related field is required at the time of appointment.
A minimum of two years working with children in an early childhood or primary grade educational setting (birth to age 8).
