INTERPRETER FOR THE DEAF (DHH)
(2 Positions)
SALARY RANGE: $35.
72 to $43.
55 Hourly (Range 86)
$750 New Hire Incentive
(One-time payment, upon completion of six-month
probation, if start date is 6/30/2024 or prior)
LENGTH OF SERVICE: 11 Months/180 Days/6.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Interpreter for the Deaf assists in the communication and interpreting of information for deaf students, teachers, parents, and others as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Interprets for deaf students;
• Interprets for deaf individuals at meetings, conferences, and administrative hearings;
• Interprets conversations and instructions for deaf individuals;
• Assists teachers with assessments for deaf students;
• Attends meetings;
• Performs related duties as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Skill to interpret for deaf individuals using ASL (American Sign Language);
Knowledge of Sign Language, the Deaf Culture and the Code of Ethics as it relates specifically to educational interpreting and other types of interpreting;
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal, written and manual communication form, establish and maintain effective working relationships, meet established deadlines, work at a variety of locations;
Physical Abilities include sitting for extended periods, talking/hearing, fine manual dexterity, near and far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field of vision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• One (1) year full-time experience using American Sign Language (ASL), preferably working
with children.
(Verifiable, supervised experience as a volunteer in a school or related
organizational activity may be substituted for the work experience on an equal time basis);
• Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent;
- OR -
Passage of Level 4 Certification or higher from a California State Approved Interpreter Skills
Evaluation Test, i.
e.
, Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment (EIPA),
Educational- Sign Skills Evaluation-Interpreter and Receptive (ESSE-I/R) or the National
Association of the Deaf/American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (NAD/ACCI)
assessment.
If providing Cued Language transliteration, a transliterator shall possess TEC
Unit certification or have achieved a score of 4.
0 or above on the EIPA - Cued Speech.
• Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalence of a GED or higher.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• One year of full-time employment experience in a California school district or County Office
of Education.
