Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction and care to individuals or groups of students placed in special education programs because of specific learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavior problems, orthopedic handicaps and/or other handicapping conditions; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical and instructional duties in support of the instructional program as required by the handicapping condition of the student, including specialized physical health care needs.
Minimum Qualifications Required to Apply Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by course work or experience in remedial education and behavior modification techniques and one year of experience working with children in an organized setting.
MUST HAVE PROOF OF AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: 48 SEMESTER UNITS, AN AA DEGREE OR HIGHER, A COPY OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR GED FROM A CALIFORNIA PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL DATED 1982 OR LATER, PASSING THE VVUHSD PROFICIENCY EXAM AT THE TIME YOU .

Essential Duties Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students in an assigned special education program because of specific learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavior problems, orthopedic handicaps and/or other handicapping conditions.
E Provide instructional assistance to individuals or groups of special education students in a special class, computer lab or when mainstreamed into regular classrooms; assist and attend to special education students during classroom and library activities, physical education periods or other activities as assigned.
E Reinforce instruction, life skills and social skills to students with learning disabilities and language, communication and behavior problems; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet the individual needs of special education students.
E Monitor, observe and control behavior of students, including lunch period monitoring; report progress and problems regarding student performance and behavior to the teacher; prepare referrals as necessary.
E Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher; create or modify materials to assist the learning process; administer assigned testing instruments to assist in developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs); score a variety of tests and assist in maintaining student files, progress reports and records.
E Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, exhibits and bulletin boards; operate audio-visual equipment and educational training equipment; distribute and collect paper and supplies.
E Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording grades, maintain records including attendance, grades and test scores as assigned; maintain the confidentiality of records and information related to students and parents; maintain inventory and requisition materials and supplies as needed.
E Learn and apply behavior modification and disciplinary techniques; receive training as necessary to meet the specialized physical health care needs of students.
E Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; assist students with general first aid and medical needs; assist in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment.
Provide Severely Handicapped students with hygiene care and implement special health and medical instructions per the students IEP or physician.
E Direct group activities of students as assigned; supervise students while the teacher is temporarily out of the classroom.
E Assist severely handicapped students with special and daily activities such as using restroom facilities or athletic activities; assist in loading and unloading of students from buses as assigned; accompany teachers and students on field trips and other student-related extra-curricular activities.
E Operate personal computers to assist students with learning exercises; demonstrate proper operation of keyboards and software applications; interpret on-screen instructions to students.
Assist vision-impaired and hearing-impaired students as trained and assigned; provide braille and sign language assistance as needed.
Assist with maintaining a variety of records and files, including IEP records.
Participate in staff meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
